Hint: It’s Not When You Think

Everyone tells you the same thing when you get pregnant: Book your newborn photoshoot for the first two weeks.

As a family photographer, I’m going to share a little truth that people don’t talk about enough...

Those quiet, sleepy days are lovely, of course. But there is no rulebook, and your baby doesn't come with an expiration date for photos.

I recently visited a wonderful family for an at-home shoot. When they first reached out to me, they were caught in that chaotic middle space every home owner dreads: welcoming a new baby while finishing a complete house renovation.

Dust was settling, builders were still finishing off details, and the house just wasn't ready. They kept asking themselves: Do we rush this right now just to hit the two-week window, or do we wait?

My advice to them was simple: Wait.

Waiting for three months: the part no one tells you about

In those very first two weeks, babies mostly sleep, feed, and stretch. They don't have many facial expressions yet. But when you wait until around three months old? Everything shifts.

By three months, your baby is awake to the world. They are making eye contact, tracking voices, flashing huge gummy smiles, and gurgling back at you...And if you have a toddler?

That’s where the real magic happens.

Seeing the bond between a lively toddler and a baby who can actually interact and giggle back at them is, hands down, one of the sweetest things you will ever witness.

You can’t force that kind of connection - it unfolds naturally as they get to know each other.

Capturing the home they grew up in

By the time we finally held their session, three months had passed. The tools were put away, the paint was dry, and their home was officially complete.

For this family, waiting wasn't just about avoiding construction noise - it was about creating a memory capsule. They wanted their baby boy to grow up and look back at these photographs, seeing the exact environment his parents poured their hearts into creating for him.

We used their actual life as the backdrop.

We had full-blown kitchen dance parties with their toddler. We had sweet, chaotic moments on the sofa where everyone was cuddling each other.

And their dog?

He casually padded into the frame, sitting right next to his mum like a self-appointed bodyguard.

It was warm, loud, real, and completely them.

An at-home newborn session removes so much of the hidden pressure that comes with being a parent.

There’s no packing five backup outfits in case of spit-ups, no stressing if  you’ll be late, or trying to force a rigid nap schedule. If your baby needs a feed, you sit on your own sofa. If your toddler needs a breather, they go grab their favourite toy. You get to just chill, make a hot cup of tea, and exist together as a family in the place where you feel safest.

Your home doesn't need to look like a magazine spread...The most meaningful photographs are simply the ones that remind you how it felt to live within those four walls, and love each other through every messy, beautiful chapter.
